The question nobody in council will answer
R95 million was signed off to fix Komani’s streets. Most of it is unaccounted for, and the same roads still flood every winter. So residents stopped waiting: they mixed their own tar and closed the potholes themselves, with borrowed tools and no budget.

2023 to 2025 · We took council to court
The municipality owed Eskom more than R1bn, and the debt was growing by up to R30m a month, while refuse was collected from only 55% of homes. So with Let’s Talk Komani we asked the Makhanda High Court to dissolve the council. When the High Court said no, we took the case to the Constitutional Court.

2026 · Nomzamo called us in
Nomzamo residents called a meeting and asked The Independents to come. Hundreds joined that day. Councillor Amzisile Titus set out what Nomzamo is still waiting for: a police station, a clinic, cell towers that work, and water that runs.

Ken Clark named The Independents’ mayoral candidate
A councillor since 2021, Ken Clark is standing for mayor of Enoch Mgijima for the second time, on “We’ve built businesses. Let’s rebuild Komani.” His focus: getting the municipality working, bringing in investment and creating jobs.

Back in the High Court to dissolve the council
On 14 November 2024 the party and Ken Clark asked the Makhanda High Court to dissolve the council and appoint a competent administrator, citing a letter from the Finance Minister complaining that council defies the administrator’s orders.
